1. Measuring your arm
Stretch your arm out to the side.
Measure the distance between your neck and the middle of your hand (where your thumb connects to your palm).
- 42 - 46 cm: choose a quarter-size violin
- 47 - 51 cm: choose a half-size violin
- 52 - 56 cm: choose a three-quarter-size violin
- 58 cm or more: choose a full-size violin

2. Age
If you can't measure the arm, you can choose a violin based on age.
- 5 - 7 years: choose a quarter-size violin
- 7 - 9 years: choose a half-size violin
- 9 - 12 years: choose a three-quarter-size violin
- 12 years and older: choose a full-size violin

3. When in doubt
If in doubt between two sizes: choose the smaller size. When a child plays on a violin that is too large, it becomes harder to reach everything properly. This leads to a tense posture.
Make sure the first experience with a violin is a relaxed one; if in doubt, choose the smaller size violin.
